2001. Limited to 250 copies in total, this is one of only 5 SPECIAL BINDINGS by Stephen Conway, bookbinder of Halifax. The book celebrates & illustrates the book decorations of Thomas Lowinsky (1892-1947) and includes many fine b&w and colour examples of his work, either printed directly into the book, or tipped-in, and include dustjacket patterns, page decorations, wood engravings, menu designs, line drawings etc. There is a monochrome photograph of Lowinsky tipped-in at frontis, and a memoir by Katherine Thirkell, Lowinsky's daughter; also includes an annotated checklist by Oliver Clark. Hardback book. p.122, size: 9" x 13", slipcase, some additional binder's copies of prints from the book laid-in, plus binder's specification (see below) on binder's headed notepaper. Binding details: bound December 2002 by Stephen Conway leather; as follows: spine with cloth strip on the foredge; boards covered in hand painted paper, with a large recessed panel on the upper board: the shape being for one of Lowinssky's designs for pattern. A large sunken inlay on the upper board is covered in black paper, onlaid with a mosaic of examples of Lowinsky's handwriting, stained and waxed. The edges of the inlay are painted black. Materials used by Stephen Conway are of archival quality. Signed & dated by Conway on the colophon page. The binding is also contained in a felt lined drop back box. Condition: as new. Recommended.
